A “Building A Powerful Vision” 5 Minute Jump Start…

“The best way to predict the future is to create it.” –  Peter Drucker.

jump

My takeaway from Peter Drucker’s statement above is: “Create Your Future”. These three words are remarkably empowering. To me, these words are a command, permission, a gift and a nudge. Like our DNA,  the statement “Create Your Future” has a different message in it for each of us.  No two futures are alike. The future I choose to create will be entirely different from yours.

When I repeat the words “Create Your Future”, I feel an internal shift. When I add a deep and resounding voice to the statement, a command comes alive. When we embrace the command, we can cut through all of the busy work that impedes our progress. We can start making significant strides in toward creating a future we adore.

For the reader whose life is filled to overflowing, I offer an easy 5 minute activity for this week that will help you Jump Start your Powerful Vision. Simply print, post and ponder the two following quotes:

“Live a life you weren’t going to live anyway”.  ~

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” ~ Robert Frost

Then, watch what happens.

A Great Start To 2016

Welcome to a New Year!  Everyone is getting in on New Year’s Resolutions  – even Oprah. Her recent alignment with Weight Watchers is making health and lifestyle conscious people throughout the world take notice. Is it a coincidence that she’s featured in Weight Watchers Magazine in January I think not. January is a powerful month.

As consumers of information and media, we need to carefully filter the news and views that reach our eyes and ears. I hope that as this year unfolds, you select messages that focus on Hope and Optimism. With holidays behind us and a shiny new year at hand, this is a great month to access Building A Powerful Vision” tools designed to help you gain and maintain a positive focus as you move in direction of your personal and career goals.
Building A Powerful Vision tools on tap this month:
  • In addition to Oprah being featured this month, you’ll find my Building A Powerful Vision” philosophy and approach quoted in a featured article on Vision Boards in Weight Watchers Magazine, (Jan/Feb 2016). The article is “See It, Be It” by Cari Wira Dineen. You can purchase a copy of the magazine online or at the grocery store or Barnes and Noble. (Of special note: I happen to love the fact that Oprah is a proponent of vision boards as a way of accelerating accomplishment.)
  • Tune into my featured interview in The Millionaire Mama seminar series (begins on 1/15). This seminar series is free and designed for entrepreneurs who want to get started or move ahead. Lots of great advice and giveaways are yours for the taking.
Next up this year are two new projects; an 8-week course, ‘Back to School’ For Your Hopes and Dreams and a Vision Board Party-Pack.

3 Steps to Sustaining A Powerful Vision (When Life Pulls You In New Directions)

In Abundance, Career Coaching, Destiny, Goals, Hope, Prosperity, s Mentoring, Success, Transformation, Vision, Vision Boards on 2015/10/18 at 10:13 am
The Puzzle of Life

The Puzzle of Life

As you may know, I frequently remind readers that the Building A Powerful Vision process provides the internal results of Clarity, Hope, Confidence, Momentum, and Happiness. The medium used in doing this work with individuals and teams is vision boards. A vision board is an external and concrete expression of the picture you hold in your mind of what you want to attract and achieve in your life. Once you’ve created your vision, you build belief through incremental successes. Early successes and commitment result in greater progress and accomplishment naturally follows (Find out more about this and find my books at http://tessdenton.com).

Once an individual creates and commits to a Powerful Vision, life becomes brighter. Good things start to happen. You get on a roll, and you feel unstoppable. Here’s the catch: As effective as my process and tools, or any tools and process you are using may be, you grow and change over time, as do the people around you. Life pulls at your plan, and you find yourself asking, “How do I keep my priorities and my plan in the forefront when new demands on my time and energies show up?” This is where Sustaining A Powerful Vision comes into play.

Sustaining a Powerful Vision and staying true to your vision is a journey, an art, and a science. I’m living the effort right now! In the time between the release of my last book, “Building A Powerful Vision Planner:  A One Year Guide To Creating A Life You Love” and now, I’ve been attending to the many moving parts of my own life. During this time, I’ve made choices about the focus of my own career. I have adjusted my targets relative to the balance of career, consulting and creativity. I have deferred or scaled back my efforts on a number of new projects in order to participate in the life changes taking place for my parents, as they navigate life at age 87.5!

The result is that I’ve conducted more workshops, created fewer BlogTalk Radio episodes, and spent more time managing the journey of life unfolding. I’m not sure about you, but I have come to appreciate that my intentions and vision impact the way that I live my life, and that what happens in life impacts intentions and my vision.

Examples of the many things that can happen on the way to your vision for life and success:

  • Families get larger
  • Parents age
  • Job transfers happen
  • Priorities shift
  • New dreams emerge
  • Health improves

You may notice that one day, you wake up and find that your priorities have changed, and that you need to adjust your vision. Naturally, when life makes new demands, you accelerate some activities, you put the brakes on some plans, you wonder if you can stay on the path of your vision. On some days, you might doubt that you’ll ever figure it out. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

Today, I offer three steps to you to help you feel in control, if this is happening to you:

1: Find a quiet place, free of clutter. It is best to take a trip to a spot where you can be alone, perhaps with a cup of coffee and some great music. Step away from your home or office. Once you’re comfortable and ready to concentrate, placed a blank sheet of paper on the table. Write out the following questions and then your answers to the questions:

  • What’s been added to your plate that has changed your sense of control of your time or your freedom?
  • Is “what’s been added” draining your time or your energy or both? Write a few examples of how it is draining.
  • Is “what’s been added” a situation or new responsibility happening for the first time or is it something that you have encountered before?
  • Is “what’s been added” it temporary or permanent? How long is this new responsibility likely to stay?
  • Is your new responsibility something you selected or intended or was it thrust upon you?
  • How is it contributing to your life (for example, life lesson, additional revenue, more time to build relationships)?
  • If you have a vision or plan for your future that you’ve been working on, do you need to or want to adjust your plan, based on your new responsibilities?

2: Looking at the last question, “If you have a vision or plan for your future that you’ve been working on, do you need to or want to adjust your plan, based on your new responsibilities?”, write a few statements about how you think you can stick to your plan for your vision, As an alternative, if it appears that you need to alter your plan, what needs to change and what can remain intact?

3: Review your list of questions and your intentions to stick to or adjust your plan to achieve your vision. Spend 10 or 15 minutes settling into the feeling of being back in control of your world. Notice if you feel more at ease and at peace with the changes that life is presenting to you. Once you are satisfied with your responses and you’ve had some time to sit with them, Fold up the paper, or take a photo of it with your phone (or both), and head back into the stream of life. Keep that paper or photo handy, and refer to it often. You may find that it serves as a grounding reminder of what is happening in your life and your intention to remain centered and in control of your life during challenging times.

As always, I welcome your comments, and make it a great week!

Advice For Life

Advice For Life

This past week, I heard a beautiful piece of wisdom written by Mother Teresa, that I’d not heard before. I am sharing it with you, as food for thought when you set your intention to Build A Powerful Vision for your life.

“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.

Life is beauty, admire it.

Life is a dream, realize it.

Life is a challenge, meet it.

Life is a duty, complete it.

Life is a game, play it.

Life is a promise, fulfill it.

Life is sorrow, overcome it.

Life is a song, sing it.

Life is a struggle, accept it.

Life is a tragedy, confront it.

Life is an adventure, dare it.

Life is luck, make it.

Life is too precious, do not destroy it.

Life is life, fight for it.”

Enough said :).

Doing It All…. At What Cost?

In Abundance, Career, Destiny, Goals, Hope, Prosperity, Success, Transformation, Vision Boards on 2015/04/12 at 1:15 pm
That's Some Balancing Act!

That’s Some
Balancing Act!

Let’s see… there’s a lot on your plate. You work 50 hours each week, it’s time to file your taxes, you need to clear the year of debris so that this year’s growth can peek through, not to mention the fact that it’s time for little leagues, graduations, and summer weddings. If you’re like me, you can do it all – but at what cost? Are you working your life away?

I can only assume that Building a Powerful Vision for your future includes a point at which you can stop the madness and enjoy some leisure time. If you’re waiting for someday to say no to the many demands on your time, that day may never come, unless you set the date yourself. To get you started, here’s an exercise that will take just 5 minutes to complete.

  • On a blank sheet of paper, place the numbers 1 through 6.
  • Listen to “Enjoy Yourself” – a classic recorded by Guy Lombardo.
  • List 6 things you’ll do “someday”  – whatever floats your boat: travel to Greece, volunteer at a homeless shelter, get a hot tub, coach your daughter’s soccer team, do community theater, start saving for retirement.
  • To the right of each of those items, set a date by which you will begin or complete the activity.
  • Put today’s date at the top of the list.
  • Post the list on your refrigerator, and let it be a conversation starter for the people in your life who pass through or join you in the kitchen. Your innocent list may just get others thinking about what they’d like to accomplish and by what date they will take action, jut like you.
  • Three, Six, Nine and Twelve months from now, review your list and not what progress you’ve made on those items occurring soonest.

If you’re looking for ways to put your dreams into action, consider getting a copy of either of my books on the topic of Building A Powerful Vision. You can build a vision board yourself, throw a party with friends or begin a one year journey of creating a life you love. So many choices!

Steal Away and Create Your Master Plan!

Pssst! Over Here!

Pssst! Over Here!

I love technology and the speed at which new ideas, information and products come to market. That being said, the pace at which we’re living can be overwhelming. For all of our modern conveniences and advances, life still has phases – young adulthood, parenthood, vital middle age, and our senior years.  Highpoints such as first love, gaining independence, marriage, dealing with the responsibilities of family finances, etc. have been in place, in one way or another, for centuries.  Perhaps one of the key differences is that the schedule stuffing we have made habit and our desire to have the next bright shiny thing that’s being marketed has put ‘taking time to pause and reflect’ on a list of endangered species. .

More specifically – Just a few weeks ago, the calendar turned to a new year.  Thousands of us came blazing onto the scene with intentions, resolutions and pronouncements about how we will create new habits, usher in a new era and deliver results.

Now – we’re back in ordinary times – with taxes and bills to pay and Superstorms that create gridlock. Here’s an idea – How about slowing down for a spell, before we get too far ahead of ourselves this year? A critical component of Building a Powerful Vision for Your Life, whether you are seeking improvement in one or two areas or a complete life transformation, is to schedule time for Reflecting and Prioritizing.

I’m going to hazard a guess that as the New Year drew near; most of us did not pause, to map out how we might add the “new” into our already busy lives. We were busy wrapping the up the holiday season and completing projects that had to be finished by December 31st.

Relax! Your intentions are good – they deserve to produce results.  Now is a perfect time to blend your resolutions into your schedule. You’ve probably got some energy build up around your intentions and resolutions. One of the best ways that I have found get centered and create a plan is to set aside one chunk of time to get started. The chunk of time can be ½ of a day, or one full day, or one crazy morning when you set your alarm for 3AM. The secret is to steal away for four hours.  The 3AM advantage is that it’s a generally non-interrupted bit of time. You can accomplish planning and prioritizing that will pay off all year long. Select a top priority and Set 30-60-90 day goals. A couple of years ago, I recommended a one-day DND (Do not Disturb) Retreat – in town, without travel, with no fee – simply a day away from all distractions. What I’m talking about here is a variation on that theme – for those who feel that they can’t steal away for a day – because of life, family and work commitments. Whichever method you choose – just choose!

Here’s the up-front promotional piece – In the years between the one-day retreat recommendation and today, I’ve developed and published a tool that can help you accomplish your goals. The title is Building A Powerful Vision Planner – A One Year Guide To Creating A Life You Love.  I priced it under $20 and I assembled the activities in a manner that you can pick it up, put it down, plan in chunks and celebrate your successes. If you’re like me, you can spend $20 for a lunch, a trip to the movies, heck, even a trip to the drugstore to pick up Q-Tips. You can plan without a planner, but a guided journey will probably yield more results. Go to tessdenton.com and click on products. You’ll find the planner there. End of commercial.

So – back to your time just for you. I think it’s great if you find a friend who will agree to do this activity along with you. You don’t need to be in the same room, but you’ve essentially found an accountability buddy. Someone else who uses the same process you do and can serve as a discussion partner for the ideas and plans you put in place.  Debrief with your accountability partner after you’ve each conducted your planning session. Then – mark your calendar for another power session in 90 days. By that time, the days will be longer, and you’ll be ripe for a new round of goal setting, and you’ll need a get-together with your accountability partner. By then, you will have a feel for how well you’ve been able to integrate new ideas into you schedule. At the very least, you’ll know if your plans for your new intentions are taking root, and you’ll have 8 months left in the year for course correction!

That’s it for now! As always, I welcome your comments and make it a great week.

A Clean Start and A Fine Finish to 2014

In Abundance, Career, Destiny, Goals, Hope, Prosperity, Transformation, Uncategorized, Vision, Vision Boards on 2014/10/15 at 5:42 am
Clean Start. Fine Finish.

Spruce Up Your Point of Attraction!

I’ve been away for business travel, paired with some personal fun. Destination – France. Now I’m back, and I’ve returned just in time for autumn, one of my favorite seasons of the year. This is often my most productive and creative season.  It’s taking a few days to adjust to the time zone, so I am up and running at 4AM.  This gives me time to reconnect with my blog and business.

If you’re feeling stalled out or disconnected, relax. As I often say, every day offers a chance to begin again. I recieved this “Abraham” quote over the weekend and I have been reflecting on it since it arrived in my Inbox. If you need a clean start, this concept may click for you: “Your deliberate effort to tell a new story will establish a new pattern of thought, providing you with a new point of attraction from your present, about your past, and into your future. The simple effort of looking for positive aspects will set a new vibrational tone that will begin the immediate attraction of thoughts, people, circumstances, and things that are pleasing to you.” —Abraham (Excerpted from the workshop: Money and the Law of Attraction on August 31, 2008).

With two productive months ahead of you to gain traction on personal or professional goals, perhaps it’s time for you to  create a Vision Board, It will help you tell a new story. As Abraham notes, it will provide a new point of attraction for you.

Knowing that holidays are approaching and that the days are getting shorter if you live in the northern hemisphere, focus on creating a Vision Board that can serve as a fine finish to 2014,  and serve as a springboard into 2015.

  • List three changes you can make in 60 days.Keep the list simple. Ideas for success:
    • An 80/20 diet (80% healthy foods – allowing for 20% indulgence for the holidays).
    • Clean out an area of your home, set it up as your serenity space and begin a 20 minute per day practice of centeredness
    • Walk 3 miles four days a week
    • Create a budget outline for 2015
    • Begin a composting or recycling regimen
  • Using a picture frame, cut a piece of foam board to a size that fits into the frame. Then, select pictures, phrases, cartoons and textiles that relate to your list of changes. Paste them on your board, and place it in a frame. Your vision is now a piece of art. It’s an external expression of what you want to attract into your life through the end of the year.

This is a simple process, but it can serve as a powerful catalyst and motivator for you to have a fine finish to 2014.

If you like these concepts, visit tessdenton.com. This is a great time of year to begin your planning for 2015. Here you’ll find both my book, “Building A Powerful Vision Board” and my 2015 Planner, which will take you on a one year journey to creating a life you love!

As always, I welcome your comments and make it a great week :).

Change versus Transformation….. Make a Choice and Make a Plan!

Here - Let Me Help You!

Here – Let Me Help You!

Happy Fall! These are what I love to call “the productive months” – if you’re considering a major change or you wish to transofrm your life, you might enjoy this short post:

Change is doing things differently. Change is something that can be measured. Change is behavioral. Transformation lies beneath the surface. Looking at what happens in one’s life with greater awareness and curiosity. It means responding in new ways to opportunities and challenges.

It means being conscious and aware of your thoughts, reactions and actions. It means keeping your end goal and your vision in mind when you make choices as you work, play, invest, make career choices and spend time with people. It means keeping your end goal and your vision in mind when you experience success, disappointment, obstacles, uphill battles and incremental wins.

So, what will be your first step or your next step on the journey?

Being with a plan! Of course, creating a plan of action around a vision is not something that you are born knowing how to do. I designed and published a planner Building A Powerful Vision Planner: A One Year Guide To Creating A Life You Love. Your Building A Powerful Vision Planner will guide you every step of the way. This planning tool is designed to help you stay creative, achieve focus and engaged.

Stay awake, alert, and inspired on your journey. Whether you choose my planning tool or you find another that floats your boat,  PLAN!

As Always, I welcome your comments and wish you a great week.

Three Good Reasons To Lead a Life of Positive Anticipation

In Abundance, Career, Destiny, Goals, Hope, Prosperity, Transformation, Uncategorized, Vision, Vision Boards on 2014/09/07 at 3:58 pm
Expect Good Things!

Expect Good Things!

… And the three good reasons are:

1. You will ease up on negativity. Media and Social Media are dripping with stories of all that’s wrong in the world today. Stop the insanity!

2. You will begin focusing on possibilities, which improves the probability of good things happening in your life. As Esther Hicks (Abraham- Hicks) says, ” The better it gets, the better it gets!”

3. You will appreciate what’s right in your life, right now. There’s no need to wait for some day to be happy.

I hold a very strong belief that every day is a chance to begin anew – that today may be a day when something great happens. The origin of this belief goes back to a time somewhere around age 12. It was at this age that the words “try-out” and “audition” entered my vocabulary.  My success rate in being selected for red-rover, softball and cheerleading teams was abysmal. In fact, I think that I’m 0 for 20 in that category. Although I was tall, lean and coordinated, I was not athletic. I was more of a song and dance girl.  Once I turned my attention to contests related to the performing arts, my world opened up. Finding a niche suited to my strengths was key to building confidence in my abilities. Along the way, I’ve learned that in order to have great things happen, you have to be brave enough to show up and risk rejection – again and again.

I learned, when working in theater and in sales, that beyond skill and talent, success is “a numbers game”. I have a success niche, and that great things tend to happen more when I’m playing in that zone of strength, than when I am out of my zone. The same is probably true for you. A friend of mine is a casting director in Chicago.  She once explained that in casting a commercial or film, the casting director has a “type” in mind for most roles. They call a talent agency, and ask that actors with a certain look (age, physical features, frame, etc.) and talent be invited to audition.  When you attend enough auditions, you notice that you compete against the same set of actors, over and over again. You show up at each audition, in anticipation that this is the day that something great may happen – you’ll be cast, and your destiny will change. You audition for more roles than you get, but you must show up in anticipation of something great happening each time you’re called.

Regardless of the role in which you are cast, there is the opportunity of something great happening in your life on most days. The definition of GREAT changes over time, just as you do. Great today may mean that you got to spend four hours with your teenage son, and you discovered that the wisdom you’ve been sharing with him for the past sixteen years is taking root. Great today may mean that you found parking spot 50-fee from the train station, allowing you to get to work on time, which rarely happens. Great today may mean that you have been invited to interview for a job you’ve always wanted, and your financial situation is about to change for the better. Great today may mean that you left the dentist without a follow-up appointment to have a tooth filled. Great is anything that takes you to a happy place.

I challenge you to one week of waking up each morning, in anticipation of something great happening in your life. It will inform and transform your day.  Send comments, send feedback. I’d love to hear what unfolds for you.

As always, I welcome your comments. Make it a great week!
